Scholarship Donations Give Talented Students Access to a Sarah Lawrence Education

Thanks to our generous donors, Sarah Lawrence College is able to provide financial aid and scholarships to deserving students who would otherwise be unable to attend. Ideally suited for Sarah Lawrence’s unique and personalized education, these talented and driven young people develop their academic and creative potential, and thrive in the College’s vibrant community.

Yekaterina (Kate) Bakhtiyarova and Sage McKay, both members of the class of 2019, are recipients of Mary Burke Griggs Endowed Presidential Scholarships. Kate is on the path to becoming a political journalist. By concentrating on classes in politics and taking internships in media production and news, she has found a perfect balance to achieving her dream career. “This is the beauty of a Sarah Lawrence schedule: I not only get to learn about international relations, global crises, and write under the mentorship of the incredibly gifted Jo Ann Beard, but I also have a part-time work schedule. All the while, I am the editor-in-chief of the school paper, The Phoenix. I know what you're thinking, and don't worry—I’ve learned how to get human amounts of sleep. I promise.”

In addition to his dedication to social justice, Sage is passionate about theatre and acting. He has pursued the art form in classes ranging from musical theatre to theatre history. He has excelled in nearly a dozen Sarah Lawrence productions, and further developed his acting skills during a semester abroad at the British American Drama Academy in London. Sage is also dedicated to his academic interest in marginalized communities, and feels that his social justice classes help him develop his professional skills as a Resident Adviser and a summer Resident Counselor at the College. “Sarah Lawrence best fits my academic interests, my commitment to social justice, and my love of music and theatre. Most importantly, I feel that Sarah Lawrence is an environment that values the whole person in all of our many dimensions.”
