ADVANCING ACADEMIC INITIATIVES;
SUPPORTING OUR INSPIRING FACULTY

To deliver our unparalleled education—elements of which many schools have tried to mimic—we need to get and keep the best faculty: teacher-scholars who are active in their fields and will guide our students to think analytically and critically, to draw their own conclusions, and to transform their knowledge into their own pieces of scholarly and artistic work. This is how our students gain the skills and confidence to tackle the tough problems in the world.

We also need to expand the scope of a Sarah Lawrence education. Students are coming to us with increasingly broader interests and we need to be able to say ‘You can absolutely do that here.’”

Kanwal Singh Dean of the College

Kanwal Singh, dean of the College and a member of the physics faculty, earned her BS from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. While her focus is condensed matter physics, she has always been interested in scientific and quantitative literacy and in interdisciplinary education: while focusing on physics, she also studied French, Norwegian, and art history—a course of study that would have been completely natural at Sarah Lawrence.

Sarah Lawrence faculty members are both committed teachers and outstanding scholars, artists, and professionals—and they spend far more time working with their students than do faculty at any other liberal arts college in the country.

Through donning, classroom teaching, intensive participation in students’ independent conference work—and through advancing their own scholarly and artistic endeavors—they make Sarah Lawrence’s distinctive academic model possible. Each member of the faculty creates and sustains the highest standard of academic excellence: fearless exploration, intellectual rigor, and a commitment to making a lasting difference in the world. When our alumni get together, they inevitably talk about the faculty with whom they studied ... and the faculty with whom they’re still in contact.

Our faculty members work hard: through new endowed funds we will ensure that resources are in place to continue to attract and retain Sarah Lawrence’s greatest strength. And while we need to secure and advance our position in areas that have long defined the College, such as our signature programs in writing and the arts, we need to invest more broadly if we’re to increase the scope of our offerings and provide the opportunities for exploration and discovery that will prepare our students for the world that they are entering.

We are seeking $40.7 million in new endowment to fund faculty chairs and programmatic support.

As a College, we are only as strong as our faculty, only as relevant as our academic offerings, and only as compelling and respected as the intersection of the two. To be ahead of the curve, it’s important that we invest in both.
